The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to bring new works to theater audiences and Disney+ subscribers. Recently, they released a highly anticipated new film titled Captain America: Brave New World. This film is closely connected to previous works such as Eternals and The Incredible Hulk. In this new installment, audiences will see familiar faces, including Tim Blake Nelson, who will reprise his role from The Incredible Hulk. Nevertheless, concept art reveals that the design of Samuel Sterns / “The Leader” will be more faithful to the original comic book appearance.
When the cast list for Captain America: Brave New World was announced, featuring several actors who had played Hulk-related roles in The Incredible Hulk, including Nelson, fans were thrilled. In the film, Nelson not only returns to his previous role but also becomes the mastermind and the true villain. Some fans were not entirely satisfied with his look and character setup in the film. To satisfy fans’ curiosity, Marvel Studios released concept art for the film, along with the book Captain America: Brave New World – The Art of the Movie. This book details the artistic design and visual effects in the film, allowing fans to gain a deeper understanding of the behind-the-scenes production. The Twitter account “Art Book Collectors” also shared different interpretations and artistic representations of The Leader, further sparking fans’ discussions and expectations for the film.
Although Tim Blake Nelson’s appearance in Captain America 4 is somewhat unsettling, he is far from being defined by this look. Comic book fans will notice that the concept art is more faithful to the source material, especially with the character’s head significantly enlarged to match his enhanced mental abilities. To the faint of heart, be brave!

Truly portraying a protagonist with a large green head is no easy task. This attempt is always risky, as the image may appear too comical to engage the audience. Just look at Corey Stoll’s portrayal of M.O.D.O.K. in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Fans expressed dissatisfaction with the character’s appearance, visual effects, and how he was used in the story. Perhaps the filmmakers are worried about repeating similar mistakes.
The future development of Tim Blake Nelson’s character in the Marvel Universe is undoubtedly exciting. Not only does he survive the blockbuster directed by Anthony Mackie, but “The Leader” also appears in the post-credits scene of Captain America: Brave New World, seemingly foreshadowing the upcoming multiverse conflicts in Avengers: Doom and Secret Wars. We can only wait and see if this character will return in upcoming Marvel films.
In many ways, The Incredible Hulk has always felt like an isolated island separate from the rest of the Marvel Universe. Mark Ruffalo has played Bruce Banner since The Avengers, which is a significant reason why this standalone film feels out of place. We have never seen most of the characters return, but Brave New World brings back not the online version of “The Leader” but Liv Tyler as Betty Ross. Although her role is small, it ultimately helps this 2008 film connect with other parts of the Marvel Universe.
Captain America: Brave New World is currently available on Disney+. Only time will tell if Tim Blake Nelson will return to the Marvel Universe as “The Leader,” but he seems to have insight into the upcoming conflicts.
